Even though this is a large eye-catching piece, it has a simple manual mechanism. The snuffer is attached to the front edge of the wing lid; it must be raised before striking. The sparking wheel is attached to the same axel as the propeller. Turning the propeller by hand turns the wheel to create the spark.

This lighter is totally unmarked. The previous owner thinks it was made in the U.S. during the 1940s. I have only seen this lighter once before, in the Volker Putz Museum. Can anyone share information about this piece? ****** .

Thank you Hartmut.
Does someone know about aviation history? Maybe the style of this plane is modeled after aircraft from the country where it was produced. I am not knowledgeable about this topic but maybe it is a PT-17 Stearman? http://www.aviationheritage.com/aircraft.cfm
