Here are some problems that many collectors encounter when attempting to do serious research on lighters:
1. Relying on a model name of the lighter. Some names were trademarked and others were not. Many lighter names were used by manufacturers that did not produce lighters. A name on any lighter could also be found on a lamp, a stove, a gun, silverware, jewelry, etc....
2. Relying on one or two books and assuming that the information is correct or even applicable to lighters.
3. Relying only on information found on the internet. Many new lighter myths have been created from "internet only" research. Lighter websites are notorious for fostering myths and misinformation.
When an attempt is made to discover accurate facts about a certain lighter, you must get out of the chair and visit the libraries, especially University libraries. They are treasure chests of factual information. Also, buy as many trade journals and catalogues from all industries that you can afford. Then actually read them. Also, advertising brochures can produce great results.
Now, to the lighter in question. The model name gives no information. The "DRP" designation may lead to the inventor, but may not lead to the manufacturer. The large number could be a specific production run or a catalogue model number or anything else that the manufacturer wanted to designate. No help from the markings on the lighter (so far). But there is one more mark that may provide the answers. The "egg shaped" oval with the "FJ" inside may be a trademark or manufacturer or vendor mark. Now we have information to begin the research. The dates to search will be from 1909 (Imperator mechanics come to the marketplace) and the end of WW1. This will limit our search. The "DRP" provides the limit for which country it comes from. I do not look to any company information that does not specifically mention lighters. So going straight to the catalogues and journals provides the answer for this lighter.
A 1912 advertisement and a 1913 report provide all the facts we need to identify the manufacturer. FG Jungel in Dresden manufactured his own lighters and sold other manufacturers lighters.
Freundliche Grüsse,
Scott

Hello Scott,
thats why I wrote possibly made by Carl Haupt.
In 1910 there were 1000`s of manufactureres and wholesalers in Germany related with lighters. Alone in Pforzheim you had over 40 producers in lighters. So you would have many initials with FJ.
Also it could be several or different initials like FUJ, EJ, EI what ever...
The Add from Jüngel is a HW lighter. Is the columbus a HW?? Looks a little different.
The lettering "Columbus" from Carl Haupt and the lighter both look similar. Especially with the quote. Companies as you know often changed there lettering slightly every few years. Carl Haupt produced Bijoutrie (Jewlery) goods, which in overal term would mean small goods, like lighters. In brass, silverplate, nickelplate etc. So it is not far out that maybe they did produce also lighters. Or even better: Maybe Carl Haupt made the cases with the logo for Jüngel (or for someone else) for them to trade on.
I think we will need an advertisment or similar with the excact LOGO to be really sure.
all the best and happy holidays

Hello Mike,
Please, show the trademarks that you mentioned "FUJ, EJ, EI". I think you are being somewhat argumentative just to make a point.
Perhaps you did not fully read or understand my post. Nowhere did I state that the Columbus lighter is a HW lighter. I clearly stated that Jungel manufactured his own lighters and also sold other manufacturers lighters. Perhaps you failed to read the 1913 report which speaks of the simple method of changing the stones on the Jungel lighter. This is the only difference between the Jungel COLUMBUS (not Columbus) and most other Imperator style lighters. Look at the first picture in my previous post and notice the lever arrangement for the stones.
You make very broad assertions about Carl Haupt. Therefore, I ask you to do what I did in my post, to provide evidence. Perhaps you have something that will prove me wrong. I provide clear evidence for my claims and the method I used to find my facts, but you have only provided vague assumptions about initials, and quotes, and upper-case vs. lower-case fonts. Then you ask for evidence of the exact logo "to be really sure". This is how myths and misinformation about lighters spreads like a wildfire. Please, supply evidence that Haupt ever made any lighters. I am willing to bet that he did not.
Freundlich,
Scott

Known already, but never assigned to this interesting lighter
Both patent applicants come from Berlin and belong together !
